I recently started following Kate (Kate takes 5 - http://katetakes5.blogspot.com) This week Kate has asked us to pick 5 of our bests. It can be anything, so I thought I'd join in for a bit of fun. Most of mine are closely linked but here goes:
1) Best holiday abroad:
I haven't had the opportunity yet to travel much but prior to having children Mr Discontented and I did go abroad a few times. I'd say my best holiday abroad was Corfu in 2006. I would count this as my best as it was the first (and last!) time we had a holiday where we simply ate, drank, and relaxed. It was the last holiday we had just the two of us before the kid invasion! In fact I am fairly certain it is where our daughter was conceived. (So I guess we must've been up to something else as well as eating, drinking, and relaxing! ;-) ) I am pleased to say though that we didn't go down the Beckham route and name her after the place of conception!
2) Best wedding:
Well it has to be my own obviously, although I have been to some fantastic ones over the years. Mine was in 2003, I was 23, nearly 24, and we were the first of our friends to get married. The downside of this was that I had nothing to compare it to and wasn't sure of the 'rules' and probably went OTT on some parts that I could've not worried about so much, but the plus side was that no-one else had anything to compare it to either! Result!!
Neither of us had big families so we had about 60 guests. We got married in the church I was christened in (in the New Forest) and had the reception in the hotel where my sister worked at the time. We didn't go overboard on anything- it just wasn't us. Photographs were done by a friend of the family, video done by a friend, the cake made by a colleague of my mum, and the table decorations made by another friend of mum. My dress was less than £500 but was perfect for me. It was everything we wanted at the time and everyone had a great time. On the video of the evening the dance floor was never empty.
The story surrounding the first dance still makes me giggle! We didn't tell anyone (apart from the dj obviously!) what our first dance was going to be. So we took our places on the dance floor and unbeknown to me, my new husband had asked the dj to play something 'jokey' for a laugh. So he says something along the lines of 'I know you have all been waiting to hear the song Karen and Paul have chosen for this special moment, well here it is..' and then he put on 'who let the dogs out'. I've never laughed so much. He then of course said 'not really', and played our actual song 'I've got you under my skin' by Frank Sinatra.:-)
3) Best friend:
Well this follows on quite nicely as my best friend without a doubt is my husband. A little bit vomit provoking? Maybe. However, it is him who has stuck by me through good times and tough times. I am of course fortunate enough to have a lot of very close friends who are also there for me, but my husband is definitely number one!
4) Best life changing moment:
I'm going to cheat slightly here as there has been more than one. Two in fact. I am of course referring to the births of my children. My daughter in 2007 completely changed our lives as it took us from single carefree life into hectic nappy changing madness! Then as if things weren't already crazy, 2010 saw the birth of our twin sons. And apparently you can't return them now. Only joking. I wouldn't have it any other way. Honestly.
5) Best reason to keep smiling:
My three children who drive me completely insane on a daily basis, but who are without a doubt my favourite three little people. Despite their ability to stress me out, they actually make me smile a lot and completely melt my heart which makes me realise what a very lucky lady I am!
Excellent list and totally agree with you on the last one - my 3 drive me nuts too (but wouldn't have it any other way :))
ReplyDeleteGreat list! My Best friend is hubby too...I'm lost without mine.
ReplyDeleteI got married early, too - I was 24. We didn't have anything compare it to either, which made it fun. Great list.
ReplyDeleteLoving and empathising lots with number 5.
ReplyDeleteI married my best friend in 2003 too and we had a son in 2007 :)
ReplyDeleteLovely post.
Lovely list - I enjoyed reading through it and love that your husband is your best friend :)
